If you can believe it or not, my first job in High School was working at a shoe store. At 16, I remember I could wear my Aunt’s size 10 shoes--which weren't too hard to find. By the time I was 18, I could no longer fit in any of the shoes that we had on the store shelves. I was a bit concerned since I was also 6‘8“ and couldn‘t really find anything nice or dressy to wear other then very clunky ugly shoes I had to order from a catalog. My shoe size finally stopped at 14 and I felt like nothing was out there for me to wear but simple tennis shoes, clunky flats and cowboy boots. During this time in my life, I felt like being a fashionable woman was next to impossible!
Given that everything a woman wears is based on her shoes, I was stuck with employment that forced me to wear uniforms or very simple casual wear where I could get away with tennis shoes and blue jeans. At the moment that I could finally find fashionable shoes in my size--my life literally took off! However, this didn‘t happen until I found friends in various tall organizations like the California Tip-Toppers that gave me the first list of resources that were available for tall woman. I immediately upgraded my wardrobe and managed to land a temp job in office administration. Hallelujah!
When I said finding fashionable shoes in my size made my life take off--I meant it! After studying theater and law at school, I began traveling around the world as an Amazon Model to cities such as London, Paris, Milan, and Sydney, Australia. I was so excited to be able to shop in stores that carried my sizes and allowed me to access sexy and fashionable clothing-- I could even wear clothes that complemented my shoes! Now, when I travel to modeling gigs, I have a suitcase just for my shoes.
I’m definitely not embarrassed about this; I now own 160 pairs of shoes and I'm proud of my collection. I actually think I’m a bit obsessive about it! As a tall woman, I was denied all these years and I will not be denied any longer. This little post isn’t just about shoes-- its about me in my shoes. Shoes are the basis of every outfit I wear and I’m so happy to report that I am now working with the shoe retailer, Barefoot Tess, where I‘m exploring boots, heels and pretty flats--and all of them fit me! Pay them a visit at www.barefoottess.com they carry fashionable sizes between 10-15 and have great sales and specials--just for us tall girls!
Before I depart I would like to invite you to come out and join us on October 14th at their offices between 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. I will be available for a quick snap shot and I can tell you all about some of my adventures abroad. And, if you like Barefoot Tess' shoes, they are discounting their Barefoot Tess brand shoes at 40% off that day in the store.
